Why Newport Beach is Perfect for Beach Lovers, Adrenaline Seekers, and Families This Spring

Luxury Travel Lifestyle PR

With Spring break around the corner, Newport Beach is the ideal seaside city – made up of more water than land, and with 10 incredible miles of pristine coastline.

Offering laid-back luxury for all generations, spring is the chance to experience this California hotspot at its best; temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees, which is perfect for days out on the ocean – whether that’s surfing, yachting, whale watching – or sticking to the shore, building sandcastles. Favourite beaches include small coves such as Corona Del Mar, flanked on both sides with rocky reefs for spectacular diving.

Then there’s ‘dock and dine’ experiences at some of Southern California’s best waterside restaurants; unique natural surroundings to explore; and world-class accommodations, such as the recently-opened Pendry Newport Beach, located near stylish Fashion Island and featuring the city’s first private members’ club.

Whether you’re looking for adventure, family-time, or ‘wild wellness’ this spring, here are some of the best ways to spend your time in Newport Beach.

On Land

Newport Beach offers some of the best hiking trails and diverse terrain along the Pacific Ocean. Scenic trails on offer include dramatic coastline along Crystal Cove State Park. On a 6-mile roundtrip, amble along a path parallel to the ocean, before heading down towards the water to explore tide pools and rocky coves.

Meanwhile, high up in the canyons of Crystal Cove State Park is a challenging 9.5-mile trek with an elevation gain of 900 feet and a variety of intertwining trails. The hike peaks at the Emerald Bay Overlook, with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

For a taste of wilderness out of the city, head to Back Bay, where a 3.5-mile loop – or 10.5-miles for those looking for more of a workout – along the bluffs is filled with diverse plant life. There is also a paved flat trail here, in Castaways Park, which is both family friendly and dog friendly, and boasts amazing views of the bay and beautiful homes the entire way.

At Sea

Renowned as one of the surfing capitals of the world, Newport Beach attracts both pros and beginners seeking to take to the waves. First-timers can enjoy the gentle waves just north of Newport Beach Pier, while more seasoned surfers should try popular spots such as 15th Street and 56th Street. Only the most experienced surfers should brave The Wedge, the biggest swell in Southern California with the potential for 30ft waves drawing in crowds from all over the world.

The waters surrounding Newport Beach are home to an array of whale species, including grey whales, most often spotted in winter and spring – and mega-pods of dolphins (up to 1000!) A spectacular attraction for families, couples and solo travellers, book into an organised whale-watching tour or private cruise, led by an expert crew, for insight into the best spots.

For Sleep

Pelican Hill is an opulent Mediterranean-style retreat nestled among 500 acres of picturesque coastal landscape between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach – offering the ultimate multi-gen holiday. 128 villas, all with between 2 and 4 bedrooms, are tucked thoughtfully into a terraced hillside at the resort, featuring Italian marble bathrooms and private terraces, and incredible ocean views. It also boasts the incredibly striking Coliseum Pool, which is one of the world’s largest circular pools, inspired by the timeless curves of Rome’s famed landmark – and with ultra-luxurious private cabanas.

For little guests, aged 2-10, there are new complimentary ‘Imagination Amenities’, which can be requested ahead of a stay, and are designed to inspire creative play, in the privacy of their families’ Bungalow or Villa. For spring, these include a bath bucket, full of fun soaps, cups and toys; a shimmering mermaid-themed gift; a personal set of Lego® blocks; and, for $100, a magical set to transform any Bungalow of Villa into a special hideaway for little Pelicans – a teepee, mat and fairy lights.

The resort has also launched a new package from February 16 2024, aimed at families looking for a spring getaway. A Tradition of Together is for a minimum 2-night stay, and includes 15% discount on Best Available Rates; $100 nightly credit – applicable towards food & beverage, spa, golf – for Bungalow accommodations, or $250 nightly credit for Villa accommodations; 25% off a Cabana rental at Coliseum Pool; and a complimentary upgrade based on availability at time of check-in.
